The "Paws" for your Paleos®!
The "Paws" for your Paleos®!
Since summer 2013, we’ve worked on the "urban" versions of the Paleos® and a unique sole concept that will make the shoe world think! Nothing is more flexible and more slip-resistant than paws combined with chain mail! In the course of our testing, we came to amazing insights that now also will benefit the existing ULTRA series!
As a reminder:
As is well known, hitherto the application of the Paleos® ULTRA, DELINDA, ANTERRA and PRONATIV was limited to purely natural conditions on land and in water. Besides the high safety, the scale-like stainless steel chain mail offers amazing grip properties on natural soils. Other minimalist footwear and even bare feet can barely keep up where Paleos® excel. There's hardly a better way to enjoy pure barefoot feel on natural surfaces more relaxing than with the Paleos®!
Why, then, "Multi-Paws"?Well, if you move away from naturally rough floors and you step onto smooth polished surfaces such as marble, parquet, tiles, etc. with the Paleos® they lose this in natural terrain so unique grip properties.
Why is that? Well, the effect can be easily explained with a piece of jewellery (eg a necklace): for example, on polished marble the chain links can easily be moved back and forth. However, on rough surfaces such as natural stone this is completely impossible. In this situation, the many fine links snag in even the smallest unevenness of the surface giving you tremendous gripping power!
Unfortunately, most of our customers do not have pure nature right outside their front door! Therefore, we were asked many times when at last we would optimize our foot protection also for urban, hard and smooth floors!
Initially the focus was directed purely on making our ULTRA's a safe minimalist footwear for urban indoor and outdoor areas in all respects.
What we've discovered here:
Nature always knows what to do!To understand the "Multi Paw Principle" of the Paleos® let's have a closer look to the paws of cats and dogs. They clearly showed us how the sole construction had to look like!
Unlike humans, cats and dogs have individual, almost round paw pads. Every pad adapts individually to the surface. So far, this is very similar to how our toes work. Unfortunately, the large closed area of our soles don't have this ability - you slide.
Watching our four-legged friends with their paws stepping onto hard floors, the round balls of their pads widen under the creatures own body weight on flat surfaces, increasing the surface area connecting them to the ground. The pads are closely spaced together, with such design and support of the body weight that the paws securely adhere to the ground.
In soft soils, the pads can spread to enlarge the footprint and simultaneously letting mud and water pass through unimpeded. On sodden ground and in the mud the pads sink until they reach firmer ground again. With such a gripping, multi-pad construction a slipping, planing effect is much less likely. Soft soil, sand, mud, etc. can escape to the sides and upwardly between the pads.
From of a certain soil depth and when required (eg sprinting) finally, there are the claws as a further, third grip assistance.
Really an excellent concept!Largely this is the current principle of the Paleos® and the reason for their fantastic grip on any kind of natural ground cover (algae, mosses, etc.) and slippery surfaces such as clay, mud, mud, etc. But even with the gripping power of the mesh links, in exceptional cases, it could get slippery for some steps. A particularly unfavourable combination of thick mud and earth could cause the relatively fine pored ring mesh to be clogged - a smooth sole could arise. With the Paleos® this happens very rarely - with regular shoes and minimalists footwear on wet natural surfaces, this slipping, planing effect is a permanent condition! A significant reason why only a few runners turn to off-road running with regular shoes.
The "Multi-Paw-Principle" of the Paleos®!After we had experimented (unfortunately for much too long) with large flat sole components the above-explained "Multi Pad Principle" directly led us to the desired result! A sole concept that works like the paws of our four-legged friends!
Right away an increase in slip resistance even on the very slippery nature of soils was achieved. Of course, subsequently a lot more testing regarding sole material, paw shapes, sizes, cross sections and the optimum distribution of our paws were required.
We are very happy with the final result which preserved ground feel in natural settings and the gains in safety in urban areas! With this new option the Paleos®ULTRA gained quite significant improvements in predominantly urban environments. Even we were surprised about the sum of advantages.
► Situations: Slip resistance on all kind of polished surfaces
► Usability: Now for all natural soils and slippery urban surfaces!
► (Fitted with "Paws" for rocky terrain even suitable for floors such as concrete or asphalt!).
► Sports: Among other, surfing, sailing, rock climbing, and much more.
► Indoor / Outdoor: No restriction on rather soft natural surfaces!
► Slip Hazard: The unique sole construction prevents slipping!
► Barefoot sensation: No noticeable change!
► Sole flexibility: Unchanged flexible and adaptable.
► Comfort: The mesh wraps more snugly and to foot and sole.
► Weight: Barely increased (depending on the size about 20-25g)
► Cushioning: additional 1.5 mm in the stressed areas and on stony ground.
► Grip material: 1000% elasticity, 65 Shore A? (more resistant to abrasion than usual footwear).
► Insulating effect: Additional distance on hard soils in heat and frost.
► Noise: Quiet as a whisper! Even on hard floors completely silent!
► Safety: Increased protection against injury by the combination of spots and chain mail.
Even on hard surfaces, the adaptable soles spots are hardly noticeable! The own steps almost sound like as the paws of dogs and even the footprints on natural soils are very similar to those of animals.
The different "sets of paws" at a glance:
The individual sets of "Paws" differ in arrangement, paw size, material hardness and paw thickness. All versions are extremely slip-resistant on any surface on land and also excellent for all waters and every conceivable water sport!
► For rather soft soils / excellent for water sports!
► Small, soft Paws (Shore A 65) with a thickness of 2.0 mm
► Colours: Blue, Red, Green, Yellow, Gray and Black
► For mixed soils / excellent for water sports!
► Medium sized, resistant paws (Shore A 78) with a thickness of 2.5 mm
► Colors: Blue, Red, Green, Yellow, Gray and Black
► For rocky, natural surfaces / excellent for water sports!
► Large, abrasion resistant paws (Shore A 90) with a thickness of 3.0 mm
► Colors: Blue, Red, Green, Yellow, Gray and Black
Who needs "Paws"?The basic models of the Paleos®ULTRA (DELINDA, ANTERRA and PRONATIV) are already the best form of indestructible outdoor protection on natural surfaces, whether land or water, that they can be. For purists, they provide just the maximum contact with the ground, original barefoot feeling and thus the best conditions for natural movement. But when it comes to man made conditions in urban areas it might be useful to have additional aids.
You don't need "Paws" if: ULTRAs without "Paws" are still ideally suited to natural soils and terrain, and while the addition of "Paws" can bring some benefits, they really aren't necessary if you're predominantly using your Paleos on these surfaces (sand, clay, earth, mud, streams, lakes). The ring-mesh of the Paleo ULTRAs provides the perfect grip for these surfaces. For underwater activity like diving or snorkeling, you'll also be fine without "Paws", though you might find them useful in the boat!
You need "Paws" if: If you're transitioning from water to land - for instance moving surfboards or clambering onto boats, you'll also find "Paws" useful for these and similar applications. If you're a runner or hiker and you sometimes have to deal with hard, stony or rocky ground, or you like to walk around in the city, you'll really appreciate the extra grip security "Paws" provide. Areas inhabited by humans are full of hard, smooth, polished plane surfaces and polished floors! "Paws" not only provide pleasant additional damping, but an amazing grip on artificial surfaces before reaching the park!
Even with the Multi-Paws option....
... they shouldn't be running shoes for paved surfaces! Although ULTRAs can now be used anywhere, and for any application with the additional "Paws", our recommendation is still to gravitate towards natural, variable terrains for running. Asphalt, rough pavement and concrete have always been the worst enemy for tyres, shoes and even the bare soles of the feet. In particular, this applies to metal and our stainless steel chain mail soles. For example, think of snow chains on bare asphalt. These substrates are extremely abrasion intense and only our strongest "Paws" are able to keep up with such high-friction surfaces!
Retrofitting of Paws:
Each Paleo® can easily be retrofitted with "Paws", if you send in your ULTRA's to get this done, you'll also have your Paleos® cleaned to a high gloss when you get them back to us. Order add-on "Paws" from the online shop under "ULTRA-accessories".
A look in the future: The Paleos®URBAN!But there's even more! The sole technology described above will also be used with the new URBAN series.
However, this has to be done with some modifications, as the completely new Paleos®URBAN series will have "regular" upper shoe constructions (leisure, hiking, running, aquatic use) made from 3D-mesh and liner fabrics. They will be highly comfortable, remarkably lightweight, have the appearance of modern sports and leisure shoes, while the main benefits of the current PaleoBarefoots® designs and philosophies will remain! Those who don't not know them or take a close look, will barely suspect this exceptional sole concept in eg. MAGENION.
A possible sole structure of the Paleos®URBAN series! Close up of the metal tag of the new PaleoBarefoots®URBAN series!
Of course, every Paleo®URBAN will also get his very "personal" serial number!
